More about Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a chronic medical condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of lymphatic fluid, leading to swelling, usually in the arms or legs. The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in maintaining fluid balance in the body and is part of the immune system. Lymphedema occurs when there is impairment or damage to the lymphatic vessels or nodes, hindering the normal drainage of lymph fluid.

Five Pillars of Lymphedema Care

Phases of Treatment

Reduction:

Certified lymphedema therapists lead this phase, focused on decreasing lymph volume. Typically entails intensive therapy over a short duration.

Maintenance:

Lessons and lifestyle adjustments acquired during the reduction phase are incorporated into daily life. Nutrition and exercise specialists offer guidance and support during this ongoing phase.

Chronic Disease Care:

While a patient may not always be actively seeing their lymphatic therapist they are able to return for assessment, changes to home program, or further reduction as needed for the overall success of their lymphedema management.
