The Summer Swell: Managing Lymphedema in Warmer Weather

The beach on a summer's day

Summer brings all kinds of opportunities for fun and enjoying the outdoors. And with the potential for increased physical activity, the summer months can be hugely beneficial to people living with lymphedema and lipedema. However, the heat and humidity can also pose some additional challenges so we’ve put together a few ways to navigate those hurdles while still enjoying all that summer has to offer.

Maintain compression:

Though it might be tempting to ditch your compression garments during the summer, it really is more important than ever to keep wearing them, as the body has a greater tendency to swell in higher

temperatures. If your existing garments cause you discomfort, talk to your lymphedema therapist about other options that might be available to you.

Take a dip:

Swimming is a particularly beneficial activity for people with lymphedema because it’s great physical exercise and the water naturally provides some compression. If you have any open sores or wounds, it’s a good idea to avoid swimming in natural bodies of water, such as the Chesapeake Bay.

Beat the bugs… and the burns:

Loose-fitting, light-colored clothing is great protection against insects, UV rays, and minor cuts and scrapes. Closed-toe shoes are also advisable. If you do get a break in the skin, keep it clean and avoid scratching!

Stay hydrated:

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and fuel your body with healthy foods to keep lymphedema symptoms under control.
